In a world where the landscape of agriculture is ever-evolving, the responsibility of cultivating the next generation of ag leaders falls on our shoulders. Are our classrooms adequately equipped with agricultural knowledge? Join Terry, Holden and Sara Shymko, Executive Director of Ag in the Class, as they embark on a journey to cultivate a brighter future.
A grade five class is planting seeds. One student puts up a hand and asks for a seed to plant cheese.
That is a small moment and it is not the child's fault. There is no agriculture class in the K to 12 curriculum. Whatever a student learns about where food comes from arrives through a science or social studies unit, and depends almost entirely on whether an individual teacher decides to go and find it.
What's Inside
- What the organization actually does, and the scale of student experiences it delivers across the country each year
- Why demand from teachers has climbed sharply in recent years, and what is driving it
- The harder problem underneath: teachers who have no agricultural background themselves, working from whatever material they can find
- What a university student said about farmers that is worth hearing in full
- Why a combine parked at an elementary school is remembered for weeks, and the retention research behind that
- A program that takes grade three and four students out to compare a fertilized plot with an unfertilized one, and what they work out for themselves
- Four specific things a producer can do, including the one that costs nothing but a morning
- Why students think an ag career means a tractor seat, and the list of jobs that proves otherwise
