Growing the Future

What an Agronomist Knew That an Army Needed

Episode Summary

From the frontlines of Ukraine to Canadian Ag! Yevgen’s journey has lead him all around the world before finally reaching Canada - a place he now calls home. You don’t want to miss this episode as Dan and Yevgen talk about his dreams for the Ukrainian educational system and how you can help the military frontlines.

Episode Notes

Yevgen Mykhaylichenko spent more than a decade putting precision agriculture to work on three continents: Ukraine and Moldova with a major equipment manufacturer, then Saskatchewan, then Western Australia, and then a teaching post at Olds College in Alberta, building curriculum around GIS, drones and autonomous machinery. In February 2022 the invasion of his home country made all of it relevant in a way nobody had planned for.

In this conversation with Dan Aberhart, recorded as he was about to fly back to Ukraine, he talks about the farm work first and the other work after.

What's Inside

Building a practical video library for farmers who needed two minutes on loading a prescription map, not a manual
What Western Australian growers taught him about controlled traffic farming and working soil far deeper than prairie practice
The autonomous seeding demonstration in Alberta where a robotic platform seeded part of a field alongside the farmer doing the rest
His observation that the agricultural technology he worked with every day had moved further than the equipment it was suddenly being compared to
Why mapping software built to fly a grid over a field turns out to do something else entirely
What happened to agricultural specialists in Ukraine once those skills were recognised for what they were
His long view, which is not about the war: rebuilding an agricultural sector through partnerships between Canadian and Ukrainian institutions
